The Library

A quiet, calm place
Read and read and read some more
Go, go, go explore

--Lillian R., 3rd-5th Grade

Popcorn

I was born a little seed;
From a large corn stalk.

Someone took me and pulled me off!
They put me in a pot, hot, hot, hot,
And I went pop, pop, pop!

I was turned into something new,
And many others had, too.

Hey! Look at me! I’m popcorn now!

I Am

I am Eleanor Mae Hamin Sytsma.
I see my beautiful chickens.
I hear the beautiful sea.
I feel caring.
I want to be a firefighter.
I am Eleanor Mae Hamin Sytsma.

I pretend to be a magic person.
I wonder if I will be rich.
I touch my little kitty.
I think about my fabulous sisters.
I understand my school.
I am Eleanor Mae Hamin Sytsma.

I dream about being a firefighter.
I say that I love people.
I try to touch the sky.
I hope that I have a wonderful class.
I love my family.
I am Eleanor Mae Hamin Sytsma.

The mixed up day

The day I woke up I felt different.
It felt like in my body felt something written.
I usually wake up a little late.
But I jumped out of the bed all awake.
Nobody was awake.
But suddenly my brother woke up by mistake.
I went into my parents room and they were sleeping in.
Suddenly my baby brother woke up with a grin.
In the noon, we went to a party that people said was vibe'n.
But suddenly we rubbed with poison ivy.
When we came home I started to get a rash.
In there living room, I was there in a flash.
In the house I felt nothing and never knew where to start my life.
Suddenly I look up in the sky and realized my life was a lie.

Teacher

Snapping fingers,
Getting angry

Will she ever learn her lesson?
Will she?

Does it depend on her heart?
Does it depend on if she is happy or not?

Cat and Bat

The cat and the bat.
The bat flies to see the cat.
They are friends.
At the park, the cat and the bat sit on a mat.

Both Sides of my Family

Oh how my life was great,
I never had to hesitate.
Oh it was so much fun,
I spent days running in the Sun.
Oh then one day, war struck,
everyone was thunderstruck.
Oh it was dangerous and unfair,
but it wasn’t safe to stay there.
Oh friends had to later part,
but the memories stayed in my heart.
Oh how I miss them oh so much,
I just want to get in touch.

In the new lands,
I made new friends,
to hang out with,
on the weekends.
Our parents worked every day,
to become doctors to help kids
that got into foul play.
My grandma that did my dishes,
now just sends me holiday wishes.
As time passed, every day,
we got used to living this way.

And every summer, as we return,
it is always so much fun.
I glance at the halls I used to roam,
as a kid this was my home.
As I see my old friends, we all smile,
“I haven’t seen you in a while!”

Forest of Love

I’m in the forest of love
Trying to find out what I’m made of
I try to track you singing softly
But my notes sound so awfully
Not close to yours

I see your footprints
But all I hear is dissonance
And not the sound of love

I’m in the forest of love
I don’t know what you’re waiting for
But it’s certainly not me
As I hum my melody
Not close to yours

I see your footprints
But all I hear is dissonance
And not the sound of love

I’ll just go home
And put my heart back on the shelf
And feel not quite like myself
But as I remember
I’ll just sit down with a book
And a good cup of tea
That’s just right for me

And if you come looking
I’ll just be booking
For you’re not right for me
I couldn’t find you
Nowhere to hide you
In the forest of love

So I think to myself
With a sigh of content
Romance is not for me
As it was meant
To be

And as I sit down with a book
And a good cup of tea
That’s just right for me.

All About Me

I love to read
Woo Hoo Hooray
I help others in need
Every day

When the sun is near
I go out and play
When friends come here
I want them to stay

I wrote a song
That's called "Together"
That's very long
I will love it forever

Outside I have an apricot tree
I have two sisters and one brother
They all love me
I also have a father and a mother

I am really funny
And very smart
My favorite animal is a bunny
And I love to do art

Blessings

Flowers, trees, honey bees,
and my family.

Plants, cats, gnomes,
and a warm home.

Dogs, food, eating,
and reading.

Taco Heaven

Tacos, tacos,
Start with the meat.

Cheese if you please
Oh what a treat.

Cilantro, olives, sour cream
Now those tacos are looking mean.

Empty plate,
Tummy ache.

From Mourning to Morning

It went from happy, to mad, then sad
It was tragic, it was bad
Losing a brother,
Oh, My dear mother!
Dead.Buried.Burnt.
I moan and weep into my shirt.

New baby, who is this?
Guarding my heart, but making a wish
Baby girl, I hope to run with you
Me and you, just us two

Maybe my broken heart will heal
Maybe it will soon unseal
Maybe you will come, and then I can feel
The sun again and laughter within.
Baby girl you won’t replace
But just maybe you can fill, this empty space.

Stuff

Cows are hamburgers
Pigs are pork
Sheep are mutton and
Chickens are nuggets.
Snakes have scales
Humans are hairy
Urchins are ugly
Socks are stinky
My brother's been misty
My sister's been jumpy.
You might think my poem's done
And you are correct.

There's Bread on the Roof

Oh there's bread on the roof.
There's bread on the roof.

There's crumbs in the sky.
Lem' tell you why.
Cuz there's bread on the roof.
There's bread on the roof

There's crumbs in the sky
Oh that's why.

Planets & Emotions

The sun and the moon are almost the same,
The moon represents dark midnight stars,
The sun represents morning, happiness,
You wake up to a new day with the sun,
You sleep to find another with the moon,
All of the stars and planets are surrounding us,
Will always be seen today or tomorrow or the next,
We have new ones,
Old ones,
Ones we don't know about,
And more,
To me planets represent different emotions,
Happy, sad, angry, and cold or warm,
Saturn makes you feel happy,
Uranus makes you feel cold,
Venus makes you feel hot,
Jupiter makes you angry inside,
Neptune makes you sad,
The sun and the moon are almost the same,
And many others go with it too.

My Meaningful Rocks

I am a geode. I don’t look pretty on the outside, but I sparkle like stars on the inside.

I am graphite. I am always under pressure, so much that I cannot measure. After epochs I am reformed, reborn as a diamond, rare and aglow and now I put on a show.

I am spinel. I have my shiny, unique ways. Unfortunately, all of my world mistakes me for ruby, like I’ve never had my own ways, and it seems like ruby gets all my praise.

I am a fossil, old and gray. When people overlook me, I am filled with dismay, but I am filled with wisdom and knowledge that is definitely not from today.

I am lapis lazuli. People always say I never stop feeling blue, but all my feelings just don’t depend on my hue.

I am carnelian. I always look so mad, but on the contrary if you look close at me, I’m not that bad.

I am Iceland spar. I refract light two ways, I fear no one will stop using me as a tool for the rest of my days.

I am obsidian. I have many sharp edges and a sleeky look, so when someone sees me, they flee because they think I am a crook.

I am amber. I was jealous of all of my kind that had bugs inside, until my father told me that I had a heart of gold inside.

We are all rocks trying to find our way, sometimes like you our emotions go astray. But even when we feel like this, it will be okay.

Freedom

To the men who stay at home,
sticking by the metronome,
why not go try something new,
try playing chess, or maybe Clue,

"It's too much of a hassle,"
Ah, so is life.

To the men who risk their lives,
circus performers, eating knifes,
what could this risk be for?
Just fun, or something more?

"It's just a one-time thing,"
Ah, so is life.

To those standing in straight lines,
to skydivers with broken spines,
What is man's want for freedom,
if not just a search for more!

To those who wait, and wait, and wait,
to those who want, and want, and want,
tell me what life means to you,
no matter what, it's always true.
Ah...but is life true to you?

The Best Brother

My brother is the best
He doesn't have to wear a vest

He buys me icees from the gas station
Even though he has no PlayStation

He protects me from the homeless
Even if they are boneless

He's protected me from a scary kid
But it was just me, I would have hid.

Birthdays

First day you see the planet
It's called birth
In your life you have a soul
One to Nonillion dollars it isn't worth
Life isn't parts it's whole
You can always get hurt
Don't cry because mom is standing tall as pole
Down on the ground you walk on the dirt
On a hot sunny day dad is cooking barbeque on coal
Next year on the 18th of June comes the day of my birth!
