Spring, old friend
Again you return
to the hundreds of open arms ready to embrace you
from your long slumber.
You come to rejuvenate the trees I’ve known my whole life,
to transform my world into a glowing greenery
that washes away the frozen grays of winter.
You arrive with a familiar energy each year yet…
I never seem to be ready for you.
For your brightness and felicity.
For the changes you bring.
I can’t seem to greet you with the same desperation as everyone else.
So instead I wish for your hibernation to last longer if only to enjoy
the muted environment I’ve become so acquainted with.
You come to rid the world of the season it seems to hate,
the season filled with achromatic hues and empty streets
where laughter sounds foreign and no one spares a smile as they rush to the comfort of their homes.
The season that leaves nature lamenting for its incandescence
and people with a melancholy that refuses to leave with every condensed breath.
The season known for its destruction,
the same destruction that paves the way for your rebirth
Because if the leaves had not abandoned the branches and warmth had not become scarce,
your importance would severely diminish for your presence would still be felt.
It is this frigid season that I find comfort in so…
Spring, old friend
I am not eager to remeet you.
To say goodbye to my wintry peace
and barren surroundings.
For the events you have buried that without fail change me everytime.
But I am glad for what you bring
because amidst your animated spirit
the world regains their hope of new beginnings.
