Freedom's Fall

The leaf began to fall,
a breeze giving it flight.
For precious seconds,
it would be so light
that time would stop.
Tick tock tick –––––
For a single chime,
the rustle of the trees
stopped their roar.
For a sliver of time,
it was completely free
to soar.
For this was the freedom
it received,
after months of living
on a branch.
A freedom it had never
conceived
could be its own
and perhaps it would never
have known,
if it had not broken off,
and for just a second
become alone.
