I stepped forward

Kapo brought a crate

Lie down

Felt nothing but lashes of the whip



Took time between lashes

I could hear him count

Twenty-four … Twenty-five ...

It was over, I fainted



Nobody moved

Heart was pounding

Thousands died daily in Auschwitz

This boy upset me



Thousands paid their respect

Entire camp filed past hanging boy

Kapo forced everyone to look

That night soup tasted like corpses
