The Hard Nights

I stepped forward

Kapo brought a crate

Lie down

Felt nothing but lashes of the whip

Took time between lashes

I could hear him count

Twenty-four … Twenty-five ...

It was over, I fainted

Nobody moved

Heart was pounding

Thousands died daily in Auschwitz

This boy upset me

Thousands paid their respect

Entire camp filed past hanging boy

Kapo forced everyone to look

That night soup tasted like corpses
