For years it was packed away in Mrs. Auchincloss’ attic
right near her oldest daughter’s wedding dress.
Mrs. Auchincloss wrote neatly November 22, 1963 on the box
making sure the outfit was neatly folded.
It was then put in a plastic bag
making sure it wouldn't go stale.
I always wanted to feel the pink wool in my hands
it always looked itchy.
perhaps I would touch the blood stains
now a faded brown
and I would remember the words:
let them see what they've done
then I would fold the suit, neat as possible
put it back in the plastic bag
and make sure it would never go stale.
