The Color Of My Skin

the color of my skin reminds me that i am not like you.

the color of my skin reminds me that i will never be like you.
the color of my skin reminds me that i will fear the people
who don’t like the color of my skin.

the color of my skin means i will have to explain to my niece
that people don’t like her skin color and she’s seven.

what does she need to know about racism at seven?

the color of my skin reminds me that “i would be cuter if i wasn’t black.”
the color of my skin reminds me of the rejection i have gotten my entire life.
the color of my skin reminds me that i will no longer be able to
breathe without thinking about my last breath.

the color of my skin will always remind me of what i cannot have.
the color of my skin will always remind me of what i will not have.

the color of my skin is not like yours.

the color of my skin will never be like yours.
the color of my skin makes me different.

the color of my skin is black and
I don’t care if you if you do not like that.
