Everything We Thought We Knew

The life that we live is ironic
The things that we say seem so wrong
The things that we do seem to have too many mistakes
The way that we look seems to have too many flaws
And
The way that we think seems to be so common
Yet
We think we say the right things
We think we do everything correctly
We believe we look great
And
We believe we think uniquely
But
It's all a joke
We are who we are
No one is right about us
Except
Us
We get to decide what we say
Whether it be right or wrong
We get to decide what to do
No matter how many mistakes are included
We get to choose what to wear
Made of flaws or made of magnificence
And
We get to think what we want
Common or unique
Either way
It's what we believe ourselves to be
Not
What they believe us to be
Don't try to change who you are
Whether you choose wisely
Or
Poorly
Those who tell you who to be
How to act
What to say
What to wear
What to think
What to like
Those who tell you how you should live your life
How you should be
Telling you to be everything you're not
Leave them behind
Those who cause you pain
Despair
Leave them behind
Those who cause you to be depressed
Anxious
Disappointed
Hurt
And
Feel worthless
Or
Guilty
Leave them behind
All of them
They don't deserve to be a part of your life
No matter who they are
No matter what they mean to you
If they leave you hurting
Leave them behind
Pain is inevitable*
But
You get to choose who does this job
Who stays?
And
Who goes?
The life that we live is ironic
The things that we say seem so wrong
The things that we do seem to have too many mistakes
The way that we look seems to have too many flaws
And
The way that we think seems to be so common
We are who we are
No one is right about us
Except...
Us
